New & improved Initial ideas for performance aspect of the narrative

A narrative device that I plan to use within my music video is “different diegetic planes” this is device comes into my video because of the flashback and memory scenes. Which create two levels of reality (past and present) forming two layers within the music video. The opening of music video features the filming technique of the enigma code as the audience are unaware of where the boy is travelling too, until they realise that he is a part of the band which is performing. The result of the enigma is shown by the help of the symbolic device of the bike which illustrates the method of travel in order to get him to where he needs to be. The Drum sticks symbolise creativity and expression to represent that the character is a drummer. The object also works as the proairectic code, a way to drive the narrative onto the performance .

Initial Concept

Basic idea: section 1) Footage of a band practising, recording and performing ( ideally a male band to represent the original band) section 2) When the pace of the song speeds up or when it repeats itself, flashbacks and memory's are shown ( clips at a beach, funfair, party's, going out etc.) section 3) The sense of moment to go with the motion of the music clip, the band or an individual travelling this could ether be on a bike, a train, driving, skateboarding. The character could be going to practise or recording perhaps. Especially with the memory section or for even the whole video I wish to include a filter to make the film look older, creating a nostalgic, lost summers feeling and atmosphere to the clip. Ideally this filter would work well for the memory's section of the video to highlight that the footage is a flashback, rather than the present time. Within this concept idea I took inspiration from the filters used in “ submarine” as the film aesthetics achieve the nostalgic, 70’s film effect. I plan to look at the different filters that are available on adobe premier pro when editing my clips or other programs and effects to achieve this retro- effect. The concept of how the three sections are played one after the other repeatedly, for instance footage of the band, memory's and then the motion scene would play small sections and then cut then move onto the next section but would be a constant cycle throughout the song.

New music video "the Cads, Skin"

when looking at my concept idea of memory's, I realised in order for the concept to work that the song for my music video needs to contain repetition, or almost a loop which features through the clip, which ether speeds up or is continuous. so that the idea and aspect of memory would be played throughout this section.I feel as if my song choice at the moment " Yin" by the Nocturnes is almost to slow and does not have this idea of repetition or a loop, therefore would be tricky and harder to achieve the concept that I want to. Therefore I have found a new track " skin" by the cads, I personally feel that this song is much more suitable for my concept and plan, the up beat music and repetition fits well with my audience of young people as well.

New and Improved Stuck on a puzzle (submarine film) Alex turner video analyses

New and improved Andrew Goodwin's theory

The music video of “URL badman” by lily Allen represents many ideas that Andrew Goodwin presents on the conventions of music videos. For instance the idea of frequently references the notion of looking am example of this is used at the being shot of the man acting as a child interacting on the computer screen and how he becomes almost glitch, representing the computer trashing. The contextual reference of the computer links to the title of the song “URL badman” referring to the web address URL’s making. This also goes into the fact how the lyrics have a relationship with the visuals for instance the mother & son acting out the mother calling Alexandra for tea at (0:11), however this is only applied to the beginning of the video, as the rest of the video becomes very electronic, abstract unusual and vibrant which disregards the idea of almost acting out the lyrics. Another reference to Andrews Godwin's theory is the demand of the record label as the video includes the need for lots of close ups of the artist forming a visual style for the audience. This idea also ties into how the genre of the music and is presented through the mise en scene of dance routines, costumes, and the vibrant colors exposed highlighting the genre of pop, creating an upbeat, modern feeling to the video. Alternatively the bright mise en scene could create a “fake” and unrealistic image of the video, this could potentially be the image manipulation trying to say about the contemporary online life and the relationship to reality. For instance the artist performing in front of the brightly colored , digital screen describes the relationship between the artist and the background as unrealistic (as it’s a set up, rather than a natural background) , perhaps describing the modern image of life online and the relationship through a digital screen. The editing and the manipulated images amplifies the relationship between the music for instance the glitches are associates to the lyrics and topic of the song to the video, making it a narrative video but by also empathizing the genre of the video “pop” . Alternately the glitches could refer back to my point made earlier about the falseness and unrealistic image presented because it reassures the audience the differences between reality and online life. Another aspect of the Mise en scene which I find interesting is the digital boy character presented and how his mother ( the artist is lily Allen) is a realistic image, again I think that this is another way to present the differences between real life and the representation of the fake online. Perhaps the son is the image of a digital online game character and this is a metaphor on how the mother feels her relationship with her son is, fake and unrealistic.

Possible soundtracks for music video

I like the idea of making the video a positive, summer themed atmosphere, traveling and going out places. This would work well as I have lots of activities such as camping, parties, gigs and festivals this summer which I could incorporate, this would allow the atmosphere of the video to present the positive, uplifting side to it. Below are a few tracks which I believe would work well with this style of video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfJcN08cc9chttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfJcN08cc9c

Advantages: different musical instruments are brought in at different times, creating a build-up.
Disadvantages: the introduction is too long, this would have to be cut.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6XRyiK2rEU

Advantages: Different pace and build up creates tension and an area to develop and change the pace of the video, keeping the audience entertained.
Disadvantages: The whole song would be quite long to cover, maybe cut the beginning or towards the end.
